  • About Dance FX

Teresa Morrissette started dancing at the age of 6 at Peggy Peat school of Dance. There she learned the love of dance and realized at an early age that this is what she wanted to do forever! Performing in numerous shows, events and competitions, she finished all of her dance exams and became a qualified Teacher through the Canadian Dance Teachers Association in 1992. Teresa has been taught by many amazing instructors such as, Patsy Swayze, Kenneth Green, Bill DeRicco, Debbie Dee, Art Stone, Greg Russell, Steven Boyd, Belinda Sobie, Margaret Derksen, and Bill Robertson. She has taken many workshops here in Vancouver, New York and Las Vegas.

Teresa’s Dream at the age of 10 was to someday open her own studio and that dream is a reality! It's what she has always wanted to do, to show the laughter, the fun and the joy of dance.

Dance FX offers classes in HipHop, Bboying/Breakdance, Jazz, Tap, Ballet, Modern/Contemporary, and Variety/Musical Theater.

Students come to our studio because we offer classes to everyone, you can take one class or as many as you like, we have recreational and competitive classes. We are the only studio in Maple Ridge that offers Breakdancing! taught by Bboy Champion, Jhaymee Hizon and we also have HipHop, Tap, Jazz and Ballet for our preschoolers! We have special rates for families. DFX also participates in School District 42’s “Partnership in Learning”

HipHop is now the most prolific dance style in the World, with a huge industry following. This can be seen in many music videos and backing major label music artists across the globe. More recently it has become the theme for box office smash movie projects (Step Up 3D and the UK's Street Dance 3D) and reality television shows BBC's So You Think You Can Dance and MTV's America's Best Dance Crew).

Dance brings out wonderful, amazing qualities in your children, it relieves stress and is a great fun way to get a physical cardio workout.

    Our Philosophy

Dance classes are a valuable experience for all students. Experiences in class will be a source of pride and accomplishment for the dancer. In addition to the physical skills acquired, students are exposed to artistic expression through dance, while learning and enjoying the various musical elements. Students learn to work within a group to achieve a common goal, they learn cooperation and coordination, essential to a successful group performance.

Last, but not least, our students have fun! Many friendships and good memories are made at Dance FX. Regardless of which path our dancers choose, the talented and dedicated staff at Dance FX will provide the highest quality dance education to its students.

  • Hip Hop

Hip-hop dance refers to dance styles primarily danced to hip-hop music or that have evolved as part of hip-hop culture. To some, hip-hop dance may only be a form of entertainment or a hobby. To others it has become a lifestyle: a way to be active in physical fitness or competitive dance and a way to make a living by dancing professionally.

    Bboy

B-boying, often called "breakdancing", is a popular style of street dance that was created and developed as part of hip-hop culture among African Americans and, later, among Latino youths in New York City. The dance consists of four primary elements: toprock, downrock, power moves and freezes/suicides. It is danced to both hip-hop and other genres of music that are often remixed to prolong the musical breaks. The musical selection for b-boying is not restricted to hip-hop music as long as the tempo and beat pattern conditions are met. A practitioner of this dance is called a b-boy, b-girl, or breaker. These dancers often participate in battles, formal or informal dance competitions between two individuals or two crews. Although the term "breakdance" is frequently used, "b-boying" and "breaking" are the original terms used to refer to the dance. These terms are preferred by the majority of the art form’s pioneers and most notable practitioners.

  • Tap

Tap dance is a form of dance characterized by using ones shoes, as well as the floor, as a percussive instrument. As such, it is also commonly considered to be a musical form as well. Two major variations on tap dance exist, rhythm (Jazz) tap and Broadway tap.

    Classes:

    Tuesdays 5:30PM (6-9 Years)

    Jazz

Jazz dancing is a form of dance that showcases a dancer's individual style and originality. Every jazz dancer interprets and executes moves and steps in their own way. Jazz dancing is energetic and fun, consisting of unique moves, fancy footwork, big leaps and quick turns. To excel in jazz, dancers need a strong background in ballet, as it encourages grace and balance.

    Classes:

    Mondays 5:00PM Jazz (6-9 Years

    Ballet

Classical ballet is the most methodical of the ballet styles; it adheres to traditional ballet technique. There are variations relating to area of origin, such as Russian ballet, French ballet, Danish Bournonville ballet and Italian ballet, although most ballet of the last two centuries is ultimately founded on the teachings of Blasis. The most well-known styles of ballet are the Russian Method, the Italian Method, the Danish Method, the Balanchine Method or New York City Ballet Method, and the Royal Academy of Dance and Royal Ballet School methods, derived from the Cecchetti method, created in England. The first pointe shoes were actually regular ballet slippers that were heavily darned at the tip. It would allow the girl to briefly stand on her toes to appear weightless. It was later converted to the hard box that is used today. Classical ballet adheres to these rules:

    • A position called 'plie' is used in almost every exercise
    • Everything is turned out.
    • When the feet are not on the floor, they're pointed.
    • When the leg is not bent, it's stretched completely.
    • Posture, alignment, and placement are vital.

    Tuesday 3:30PM Ballet (3-5 Years)

    Tuesday 4:30PM Ballet (6-9 Years)

    Modern Dance

Modern dance encourages dancers to use their emotions and moods to design their own steps and routines. It is not unusual for modern dancers to invent new steps for their routines, instead of following a structured code of technique, as in ballet. Another characteristic of modern dance in opposition to ballet is the deliberate use of gravity. Whereas classical ballet dancers strive to be light and airy on their feet, modern dancers often use their body weight to enhance movement. A modern dancer rejects the classical ballet stance of an upright, erect body, often opting instead for deliberate falls to the floor.
